Bruce 🐾
Forever loved, never forgotten.
“Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love… they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog. It merely expands the heart.”
— Erica Jong
One of the dogs I’ve had the privilege to walk — and truly love — has sadly passed away.
His name was Bruce, a beautiful Doberman with a big personality and an even bigger heart. He was six years old, and although his time here was far too short, it was full of joy, adventure, and cheeky moments that I’ll never forget.
Bruce was one of those dogs who just got you. He had a way of making everyone laugh with his playful stubbornness — especially if there was a tennis ball involved. If he found one on a walk, that was it… game over! He’d refuse to leave the field until he’d had a proper play. It became a bit of a running joke between us.
💛 A Bond That Goes Beyond the Walks
After I heard the news, Bruce’s owner reached out to share her thanks — for the walks, the fun, and for the joy Bruce had on our adventures. She’s even offered to take me for a coffee while I’m still recovering from my leg injury. I honestly can’t wait to see her.
Because what I’ve come to realise over the years is that the connections we build as dog walkers often go far beyond the dogs. We get to know their families too — the people who love them most. And when we lose one of our four-legged friends, we feel it together.
🐾 They All Leave Pawprints
Losing a dog you walk — one you’ve bonded with, laughed with, and looked forward to seeing each week — is never easy.
I always check in with the families, share stories, and talk about what made their dog special. It matters, especially in those first few days when the silence hits hardest.
I understand the grief, because I’ve lived it. Earlier this year, I said goodbye to my own dog, Alfie, after 15 amazing years. I now have Rosie, a rescue who’s full of personality and comfort. She doesn’t replace Alfie — none of them do. Each dog is completely unique, and that’s what makes them unforgettable.
🌟 This One’s For Bruce
This post is for Bruce, and for all the dogs I’ve had the honour of knowing and loving through my work.
From muddy fields to snow-covered paths, from ball-obsessed zoomies to quiet cuddles at the end of a walk — I’ll always carry their memories with me.
And somewhere, I like to think Bruce has found the biggest field, the bounciest ball… and he’s refusing to come in, just like always.
Run free, sweet boy. You were so very loved. 🌈
With love,
Heather 🐾
