As a dog walker temporarily stuck on the sofa (thanks to a broken leg — thanks July! 🙈), I’ve been thinking a lot about all the ways we can keep our dogs happy and stimulated without their usual walks.
Whether you’re recovering from an injury like me, working long hours, or simply housebound by the classic British weather — here are some of my favourite ways to keep your pup’s tail wagging when walkies are off the table.
🧠 1. Brain Games Are Just as Tiring as Physical Ones
Dogs love using their noses and brains — and mental stimulation can be just as tiring as a walk. Try:
Lick mats: Spread with peanut butter, yoghurt, or dog-safe pate. Great for calming too.
Kongs and puzzle feeders: Stuff them and freeze for a longer-lasting challenge.
Snuffle mats: Hide treats and let your dog forage like they would in the wild.
Hide-and-seek: Let your dog watch you hide treats or toys, then release them to “find it!”
🏠 2. Indoor Obstacle Courses
Get creative using cushions, chairs, blankets and broomsticks to build mini agility courses in your living room or garden.
Try:
Jumping over small objects
Crawling under a chair
Weaving around cones (or plant pots!)
Keep it fun, safe and low-impact — especially for older dogs.
🎓 3. Teach a New Trick
Short daily training sessions (just 5–10 minutes) keep your dog’s brain active and your bond strong.
Fun ideas:
“Touch” with their nose
High five
Spin
Tidy up toys (yes, it’s possible!)
Even brushing up on recall and “stay” is time well spent — and they’ll thank you for the attention.
🎵 4. Doggy TV, Calming Music or Audiobooks
Pop on some dog-specific relaxation music (YouTube or Spotify have great playlists), or leave the radio on for company if you’re out.
Some dogs even enjoy watching nature shows!
🛁 5. Bonding Time: Grooming, Massage and Cuddles
When walkies aren’t happening, don’t underestimate the power of touch and presence.
Brush your dog, gently massage their shoulders or ears, or just sit together with a chew.
For dogs who live for attention, you are the enrichment.
🌧️ A Final Thought…
Not every day has to be full of walks and adventures. Dogs love routine, comfort, and connection — and there are so many ways to give them that from home.
Being off work has made me realise just how many ways we can show up for our pups, even with one leg out of action. I hope this gave you a few new ideas to try with your own four-legged friend 💛
Got a favourite trick or enrichment activity your dog loves? I’d love to hear it!
