Walking with your dog is one of the best ways to bond and share quality time together. It gives your furry friend the chance to get out in the fresh air, stretch their legs, follow their nose, and enjoy some much-needed exercise and stimulation.
We know that every dog is different, so here are some of our favourite tips to help you (and your pooch!) get the very best out of every walk:
Bring toys along.
Most dogs love to play when out and about. Balls and frisbees are fantastic choices for a fun game of fetch—Alfie’s personal favourite is chasing sticks through the woods! Find what toys your dog enjoys best and bring them along for extra smiles.
Collar or harness?
Every dog is unique. A harness makes walks more comfortable and gives extra control when needed. Other dogs might prefer a simple collar and lead. Choose what works best for you and your dog for a happy, safe walk.
Treats are your friend.
Training your dog to walk calmly or come when called? Keep some treats on hand as a reward. Positive reinforcement has worked wonders for Alfie—years later, he still comes running when he hears his name!
Let them sniff.
Don’t rush your dog—let them sniff around! Sniffing is a natural way for dogs to explore and learn about the world. It keeps their mind active and is just as important as physical exercise.
Don’t forget the water.
Always take fresh water with you, especially on warm days. Dogs can dehydrate quickly and don’t regulate heat the same way we do, so offer them water regularly. There are some handy, travel-friendly water bottles and bowls available to make this simple.
Check the pavement temperature.
On sunny days, always check the pavement with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pup’s paws. Try to walk early in the morning or later in the evening during hot spells for a safer, more comfortable stroll.
Play it safe with greetings.
Not every dog enjoys meeting new friends unexpectedly. Always ask other owners before allowing your dog to approach another. Alfie can be anxious around unfamiliar dogs, and a gentle approach means less stress for everyone.
Make sure your dog has ID.
Even with the best preparation, sometimes dogs can slip away. An up-to-date collar ID tag helps ensure your best friend finds their way safely home.
